  • About Car Rentals for Tablelands
North Queensland has an entire website devoted to self drive touring.  There truly is so much to see.

So, make sure you can read a map, drive on the right side of the road which is left by the way, and off you go into the blue yonder.

We have Outback to the west with Chillagoe Caves and the Undara Lava Tubes.  These are both geological wonders and are excellent spots to visit and stay.

Closer to home we have the Atherton Tablelands, Cairns Highlands, Tropical Tablelands region.  This area has a different climate to the coastal cities with very cold nights in winter.  There are many volcanic crater lakes and waterfalls up here as well as beautiful rainforest walks.  This is a brilliant spot to explore by car.  There are many small towns including Yungaburra, Herberton and Ravenshoe that will give you an insight into life in a small Australian town.  This area has the perfect weather conditions for Hot Air Ballooning and there are many lovely little B&B's and Rainforest Treehouses where you can stay.  There are also many small farms where you can buy your produce directly from the farmer.

Tropical farming communities such as Innisfail and Mission Beach are to the south as well as beautiful Etty Bay, one of the most picturesque Tropical little beach coves with a resident cassowary that wanders about daily and a caravan park.

Cape York is about 9 days driving North but you will need a 4WD and serious off road experience or you can go with a professional tour camping company and prepare yourself for this extreme adventure.

Only 5 hours drive north of Cairns is Cooktown where Captain Cook first discovered Australia.  There is a famous museum up here and two roads to get to Cooktown.  The inland and the coastal road.  The coastal road is more tricky and you will need 4WD experience as the rivers are sometimes over the road.  The inland road is the safer option but not as interesting or pretty.

About 2 and a half hours north of Cairns and 1 and a half hours north of Port Douglas is Cape Tribulation.  World Heritage Rainforest carpets this entire region.  This is a very beautiful drive and one of the Norths mos popular daytrips from Cairns or Port Douglas.  As there is no bridge across the Daintree River you will need to take the car ferry.   We recommend staying overnight in Cape Tribulation as then you can hear all of the rainforest sounds and truly experience your immersion in the rainforest.  It's actually very noisy at night as the native animals that live up here are all nocturnal and can be spotlighted on a night walk but are generally not seen during the day.  Cassowaries are seen regularly and please remember to drive very carefully as they are very rare but commonly seen in Cape Tribulation next to the road.

And, in and around these areas are many other pretty spots including Mossman Gorge, Copperlode Dam, Behana Gorge, Crystal Cascades, Josephine Falls, and all of the beaches that run along the coast.

Having a car is sometimes essential due to the proximity of your accommodation but it is also great to go for a drive.  Make sure you plan your day so that you don't miss any of the great infrastructure boardwalks that have been created for visitors to see the rainforest from within.  it is too difficult to just walk into rainforest as it is too dense.  You really need to go on a boardwalk or national parks track to see it properly.
