- About Local Artists for Cairns
Artworks in public spaces in Cairns are an important expression of our creative diversity and reflect our unique society.
The Cairns Esplanade has some new public art that has recently been unveiled.
"Wind Blown Leaves" by Roland Nancarrow
"Telescopus" by Dominic Johns
and "Horizon Line" by Kevin Mayo.
"TELESCOPUS" a large mosaic shell sculpture that is designed in the shape of a shell that is commonly found in the mangroves and inter tidal mudflats around Cairns. The sculpture has been created using iridescent mosaic glass tiles and Chillagoe marble. Chillagoe is a very small marble producing township located in the outback about 4 hours drive west of Cairns.
The spiral shape of the shell and design of the phosphorescent tile reflects the sky and lights up in the sunshine and moonlight without the use of power. This really is a very pretty sculpture and something that we are very proud of. It makes a very nice backdrop for photos and is located very close to the Floriana Guesthouse and the Cairns Base Hospital on the esplanade.
"WINDBLOWN LEAVES" is a Roland Nancarrow creation and is a freestanding steel sculpture with a resilient ‘new leaf’ standing erect from the windblown leaves surrounding the base. Roland Nancarrow is inspired by local heliconia tropical flowers and has created many beautiful public art works. This sculpture also reflects the nautical shapes of sails and boats often seen in Trinity Inlet.
"HORIZON LINES" by Kevin Mayo are two sculptures in the shape of a boat stood on end with human figures cut-out within the boat shape. The Dancer and The Swimmer are the shapes that have been cut out.
These sculptures are all within an easy walking distance of the Cairns Base Hospital on the foreshore of the Northern end of the Cairns esplande.
Other examples of Public Art within easy walking distance of the central tourist precinct are:
"JELLY BABIES" at the Centre of Contemporary Arts created by Sophie Cadman.
"Gilbert, Oliver, Penelope, Roxanne and Yasmin" is the title of this work and was created using fibreglass and acrylic paint.
The delicious Jelly Babies are a very popular backdrop for many holiday snaps in Cairns. Each jelly baby is equal in its form but has its own individual colour and is recognised and enjoyed regardless of age or culture as lollies!
This is a great celebration of art and is a signature peice that identifies the Centre of Contemporary Arts in Cairns. This is located on the corner of Abbott and Florence Sts.
"WOVEN FISH" in the Esplanade Swimming lagoon created by Brian Robinson
Woven Fish was commissioned by the Cairns City Council and the Queensland Government for the Cairns Esplanade Redevelopment completed in 2003. These recognisable woven fish are a standout feature of the Esplanade swimming lagoon and gleam in the sunlight making them the most photographed distinguishing feature of our Cairns esplanade swimming lagoon.
"THE INNER CIRCLE" at the Reef Fleet Terminal created by Jill Chism
This fired paper clay and resin sculptural work is a play with form and space using circle rings of Paper clay embossed from imprints from clothing and text from Taoist and Buddist literature.
"BAYBARU" on the boardwalk near the Marlin Marina created by Paul Johnson
These very interesting organic stainless steel and copper sculptural forms have been inspired by the sea anemome of the reefs and the funnel-net fish traps (baybaru) of the indigenous people. These sculptures come to life at night with fibre-optic lighting.
"CAIRNS" in 3 parts was created in 2001 by Jill Chism and David Campbell
This work was created during the City Place Revitalisation programme. This stainless steel and phot-etched sculptural work is in 3 parts and is near the childrens playpark in the City Place. The shape of this work makes a semi-abstract association with the mountains surrounding our city. The photos are dupicates of the historical images from the Cairns Museum collection.
"HISTORICAL BROOCH:SCHOOL OF ARTS was created in 2001 by Peter Thompson
These panels of screen-printed vitreous ceramic are a reflection of the School of Arts history and architectural significance.
"BUSH MEDICINE, REEF FIGURE, DILLLY was created in 2002 by Arone Meeks
Arone Meeks has created many beautiful public art works in the Cairns region. These three sculptural figures were created for the Cairns Base Hospital Redevelopment in 2002 and are inspired by indigenous forms and patterns using cut out painted steel.
"TROPICAL BENCHES" was created by various work for the dole participants and managed by Dominic Johns
During the revitalisation programme of the city area during 2002, 2003 and 2004 working in a partnership with local unemployed people Dominic Johns inspired the artists and participants to create 85 square metres of handpainted and fired ceramic mosaic tiles depicting colourful tropical thems of North Queensland. These tiles now form a series of 12 bench seats constructed along Shields Street heading from the City Place to Cairns Central.
"TANKS ART CENTRE" was a project that was undertaken in the early 1990's that turned old oil storage tanks into spaces for performance and events. This cultural precinct holds markets at times as well as outdoor movies in the evenings. At the time of the original redevelopment many Powdercoated steel webbed fencing and sculptural pieces were created all around the centre. This area is currently undergoing a new redevelopment but the original iron work is still intact.
