About Kuranda - A Village In The Rainforest

Skyrail cableway The Village in the Rainforest - A visit to Far North Queensland isn't complete without a trip up the range to Kuranda...The historic railway climbs through tunnels, across bridged ravines, past waterfalls and stops at Barron Falls on its way to the much-photographed Kuranda Railway Station. The road winds up the mountain with views of the coast from a lookout and gaps in the rainforest.

The Skyrail cableway passengers overlook superb coastal and tableland panoramas and can gaze deep into the forest floor as they glide just above the trees, making two stops in the rainforest including a walk to Barron Falls and a visit to an interpretive centre.

Upon arrival, you'll discover Kuranda is a postcard village of shady trees, an old timber church and houses, pubs, shops and galleries. There are plenty of places for leisurely dining or a simple quick snack. The country-style market stalls are terraced among the trees, show-casing local products from didgeridoos and damper to art, craft and fashions. The Kuranda markets now operate 7 days a week.

Kuranda Train The covered market includes a free entertainment by buskers and a wild life park called Kuranda Koala Gardens. Birdworld also continues to operate in the Heritage Markets. Nearby is Australia's biggest butterfly display where Cairns Birdwings, brilliant blue Ulysses and Red Lace Wings flash their presence as the smaller or well-camouflaged species feed on the flowers and in the trees. The new Australian Venom Zoo specialises in Tarantulas and Scorpions.

Indigenous culture, legends and lifestyle are the village's main attractions.

A cruise boat leaves from the banks of the Barron River and canoes can be hired by those wishing to explore at their own pace. A short drive from the village is the spectacular Barron Falls - a majestic sight during the summer monsoon season. If your interesed in guided walks of the area you can join Djabugay Country Tours in one of their tours.
